In 1958, the Barbieri Foundation (a philanthropy of inventor Cesare Barbieri) designated Trinity College as a recipient of a generous endowment grant in recognition of the quality of Italian Studies at Trinity. The Foundation wished to enrich the curriculum by sponsoring a variety of cultural activities outside the classroom.
